Partner Collections: Emblems at Glasgow University Library

Two collections of emblem books, catalogued in two different but related projects and published on two different but very similar websites were harvested for the Arkyves website.

The oldest of the two is the French Emblems website. This site gives you access to all the French Emblem Books of the 16th century, along with their Latin versions when appropriate. As stated on the site "the seed of the emblem as a genre was sown in Germany in 1531 ... it flowered and developed in France during the 16th century, and it was from there that it spread throughout Europe... On the Glasgow site you will find 27 browsable emblem books, in both transcribed and facsimile versions, and extensive search functionality. Arkyves contains copies of the illustrations and the thematic and iconographic information in the form of Iconclass notations assigned to the emblem texts and pictures.

The Alciatus website gives you access to twenty-two editions of the emblems of Andrea Alciato (1492-1550), the pater et princeps of the emblem genre. The editions date from 1531 to 1621, in the original Latin, and in French, German, Italian, and Spanish versions. The site has been developed as an extension of the French Emblems site. All books digitised are from the Stirling Maxwell Collection in Glasgow University Library.

There is some overlap between the two site as four of the Alciato editions also feature on the French Emblems site. There are 22 browsable emblem books, in which the original Alciato texts are available in both transcribed and facsimile versions, although the longer, non-authorial commentaries of 1591, 1615, and 1621 are available only in facsimile. Apart from its index, the paratextual material of the 1621 (Tozzi) edition, has not been transcribed. Again, Arkyves contains the illustrations and the thematic information.

Note that when the Iconclass concepts were specifically assigned to emblem texts you will see a token jpg that says "No image available ". Just jump to the Glasgow site to see the complete context (use the button with the small arrow).
